The Aztecs-
What people did your explorer encounter and what were they like?
After arriving in the city, Cortes and his men were welcomed immediately, and were given many gifts and different types of gold. The Aztec emperor, Montezuma, first believed Cortes to be the Ancient god, Quetzalcoatl. Because of this, Montezuma was very fond of him when he first arrived in Tenochtitlan. Shortly after arriving, Cortes captured Montezuma, revealing his true intentions. Around the same time, Diego Velasquez (who had sailed with Cortes in the past) sent 1,400 men to capture him and return him to Cuba. Cortes and his men eventually faced these soldiers, defeating them and making their way back to Tenochtitlan. It was 1520 when Cortes reached the center of the Aztec capital for the second time. But this time, they were not welcomed like before. Thousands of Aztec soldiers attacked Cortes’ men. They battled with all their might and managed to escape the capital.
After the devastating failure to conquer Tenochtitlan, Cortes and his men once again returned in 1521, with much greater weapons. The Aztecs also had a disadvantage because of the diseases that were spreading throughout their people, like smallpox. This time, Cortes was successful, and managed to conquer the Aztecs. Their journey was complete.
